Macedonia

The Foundation gives high level impartial advice and assistance to overseas judiciaries and judicial systems, through working in Eastern Europe and the Arab world.

Representatives of the Foundation undertook an assessment of ways in which the Foundation might assist the judiciary and the justice system in Macedonia.  They focussed on the improvement of administrative law; the development of the civil legal system; and alternative disputes resolution/mediation and identified a pressing need for judicial training in ECHR law, together with requests for advice in the way judicial appointments might be made, and in which legal advice is effectively given to government.

A further visit to Skopje by representatives of the Foundation looked at ways the Foundation could advise on the appointment, training, appraisal and promotion of judges. This was followed by a high-level judicial delegation from Macedonia visiting London for whom the Foundation organised an intensive two day-programme, with discussion sessions, visits to the RCJ, the Old Bailey and the Judicial College.
